Social Dance Floor etiquette has some basics that never change anywhere you go.

The leader should always make himself as appealing as possible to ask for a dance. Make sure and bring a hankerchief or a cloth in case you perspire. You do not want to perspire on your partner!

A leader should dance at the level of the partner he's leading. The partner shouldn't be drug around like a  rag-doll on the floor due to poor leading skills. Slow down and make sure your partner is picking up on your leads.

A well-maintained dance-floor should be treated with respect. Make sure  your shoes don't have anything scratchy or black rubber on the shoe. It's bad for your knees and ankles AND the dance floor, as it leaves marks we have to go around and scrub up, causing more wear on the floor. Leather or slick-soled shoes are the best bet when venturing out to dance, or to visit your lesson.

If you've spent time with Rhonda, you've probably seen this simple diagram about the "Lines of Dance" we use while prancing across the floor!

The Smooth Dances : Fox Trot, Waltz, Tango, Country 2-Step, to name a few... will travel counter clock-wise in any social dance situation. The axis and diagonal lines are to be followed during certain turns and in any performance dance. A dancer, especially a leader, will look at an empty floor and see this in his mind. (I use the term 'his' loosely as females also lead).

Be kind to your neighbor on the dance floor even if you ar showing off.

In crowded conditioins true show-offs will clear a small circle near a stage or middle of the dance floor usually, and take turns showing their wild moves off! Make sure you are safe when performing aerials in a social dance situation. Also make sure the venue you are in allows aerials! Some places like the Derby in Hollywood, have permanently banned aerials due to the risk and danger factor.

Remember we're ALL trying to have fun so courtesy is the #1 rule of import when you're out on any floor or class.

When possible support venues offering live music. There is NOTHING like dancing to live music because everyone is interacting, and it can never be repeated. That's what I love about live venues. People are there to see the excellent showmanship of the band, so it inspires you to dance your best! Very fun.
